Chapter 14
Steve loped barefoot down the stairs and into the kitchen a little later than normal on Monday morning. Fresh coffee waited on the counter along with his favorite cup. He filled the oversized mug, held it in both hands, and took a deep breath of the strong brew he preferred. The rich fragrance seeped into his system and began the job of kick-starting his morning. The first chapter of his new book had weighed heavy on his mind most of the day yesterday, and after everyone else went to bed, he'd retreated to his office for a few hours of writing.
Cradling his cup, Steve leaned back against the kitchen cabinets and savored the morning with a deep feeling of contentment. His house was quiet, his coffee hot, and his heart overflowed with gratitude for all God continued to bless him with.
The home he shared with his daughters was a huge step up from the home he'd worked so hard to provide for his wife, Lee Anne, and their babies so many years ago. He'd been blessed back then as well, but too blind to see it and too foolish to appreciate it. Steve shook those thoughts aside. Dwelling on the past accomplished nothing, but an occasional trip back kept him thankful. Thankful God had forgiven him for the mistakes and sins of his youth, thankful for his successful writing career, and thankful for a second chance with his daughters. He didn't feel worthy of any of the blessings God had poured into his life, but much like the rich brown brew in the coffeemaker, he didn't intend to waste a single drop.
He took his first cautious sip of the steaming coffee, commemorating his late night with a wide yawn and a sigh of satisfaction for a productive evening. With a sincere prayer of gratitude for caffeine, he poured the rest of the pot into an insulated carafe and headed back to his private domain. His office bore little resemblance to the bedroom it was originally designed to be. Bookcases lined the walls on two sides. Books tended to overflow onto the floor, especially when he was researching a project. An oversized desk dominated the space and faced large windows that looked out on to the street. No shades, no blinds, no curtains. Nothing to obstruct his view. He'd positioned the desk so he could look out those windows while he worked. The world at large, even this small-town slice of it, provided Steve with a constant source of inspiration.
This morning he stood in front of his windows, watching the almost autumn wind ruffle the leaves of the trees that lined the neighborhood street. Fall colors had appeared overnight, jeweled tones of emerald, ruby, topaz, and amber flickered in the sunlight. A quiet morning in a quiet town. He knew some would label Garfield boring, especially after the excitement and constant action of Chicago. But Steve's whole body hummed with anticipation this morning. His life had no room for boring when he stood on the brink of a new project.
